The Universe as a place of mystery and wonder.

Lord Martin Rees is an astrophysicist who paints a fascinating picture of how we might be changed by what we do not yet know. These programs focus on: Was there a beginning? Whether we are alone? What’s the future of the cosmos? What is the nature of reality? With each advance, new questions come into sharper focus. The key issue is what we still don’t know.

Astronomer Royal Martin Rees turns his attention to the structure of the universe, examining the perceived building blocks of life – atoms. However, he suggests they only actually account for five per cent of the mass of the universe, prompting a discussion with leading luminaries in the field, such as Professor Steven Weinberg and Professor Max Tegmark, about what makes up the remainder, often referred to as dark matter.

A poetic cinematic meditation on an extraordinary life without vision.

Gary Tarn explores the story of Hugues de Montalembert, a New York-based artist and filmmaker who was blinded by a vicious, unprovoked attack by two young assailants in 1978. After the attack, Montalembert learned to cope with his despair and to go through life a new way, seeking to make ordinary things extraordinary. Defying expectation, this remarkable artist continued to travel the world alone, learning to navigate life in a new and beautiful way. Through creative imagery and philosophical narration, director and composer Gary Tarn creates an expressionist, poetic meditation both on an extraordinary life without vision, and on the idea of perception in general.

Time lapse footage of the Earth as seen from the ISS.

Many wonders are visible when flying over the Earth at night. A compilation of such visual spectacles was captured recently from the International Space Station (ISS) and set to rousing music. Passing below are white clouds, orange city lights, lightning flashes in thunderstorms, and dark blue seas. On the horizon is the golden haze of Earth’s thin atmosphere, frequently decorated by dancing auroras as the video progresses. The green parts of auroras typically remain below the space station, but the station flies right through the red and purple auroral peaks. Solar panels of the ISS are seen around the frame edges. The ominous wave of approaching brightness at the end of each sequence is just the dawn of the sunlit half of Earth, a dawn that occurs every 90 minutes.

Sequences:
– North-to-south down the western coast of North and South America.
– North-to-south over Florida, the Bahamas and other Caribbean islands.
– South-East Asia, approaching the Philippine Sea.
– Western Europe, from France through Italy, Greece, Turkey and the Middle East.
– Aurora Australis, over the Indian Ocean, approaching Australia.
– Aurora Australis, over the Indian Ocean.
– Aurora Australis, unknown location in the Southern Hemisphere.
