The idea of the Earth as an integrated self-regulated living organism.

Based on the themes in the book The Global Brain, this moving audio-visual presentation explores the “Gaia hypothesis.” It points to the fragile regulating system that exists between all living and non-living things with the aim of showing people that recognizing the interconnectedness of all things, helps us to become more conscious of our daily actions and ultimately discover a more peaceful way to live with ourselves, each other and the planet. Well ahead of the internet and information and communications technologies’ boom, Peter Russell observed “if Earth is a collective, self-regulating living organism, what then is the potential of humanity as seen through the eyes of the planet?”

Rediscover an enchanted cosmos in the modern world.

Entheogen: Awakening the Divine Within is a feature length documentary which examines the re-emergence of archaic techniques of ecstasy in the modern world by weaving a synthesis of ecological and evolutionary awareness, electronic dance culture, and the current pharmacological re-evaluation of entheogenic compounds. Within a narrative framework that imagines consciousness itself to be evolving, Entheogen documents the emergence of techno-shamanism in the post-modern world that frames the following questions:
How can a renewal of ancient initiatory rites of passage alleviate our ecological crisis?
What do trance dancing and festivals celebrating unbridled artistic expression speak to in our collective psyche?
How do we re-invent ourselves in a disenchanted world from which God has long ago withdrawn?
Entheogen invites the viewer to consider that the answers to these questions lie within the consciousness of each and every human being, and are accessible if only we give ourselves permission to awaken to the divine within.

Stan Grof, Marilyn Schlitz, Ralph Metzner, Alex Grey, Terrence McKenna, John Markoff, Daniel Pinchbeck, and Kat Harrison among others, postulate how the disenchantment of the modern world may be remedied by summoning the courage to take the next leap in the evolution of planetary consciousness.

Balance (1989)

Director: Christoph Lauenstein
Producer: Wolfgang Lauenstein
Genre: Animation / Short
Country: Germany
Language: English / German / None

A meditation on human interdependence.

Directed by German brothers Wolfgang and Christoph Lauenstein, Balance is a remarkable piece of animation. A platform floats in a neutral space. Strange men, identical except for the numbers on their back, appearing as though out of some dystopian future, must work in concert to prevent the platform from tipping and cause them all to fall. This reasonably harmonious understanding is lost when one man pulls up a heavy box. In the ensuing struggle, balance is lost in more than one sense.

Like a story out of Game Theory, if the men were to cooperate they could all enjoy the box together, but it is selfishness that dooms them. The ironic ending of Balance, who is at fault? The men that fail to do what is best for them? Or the system that fails to acknowledge this human quality?

It has won many international prizes, including an “Academy Award” for Best Animated Short.
