The pathological pursuit of profit and power.

The documentary shows the development of the contemporary business corporation, from a legal entity that originated as a government-chartered institution meant to affect specific public functions to the rise of the modern commercial institution entitled to most of the legal rights of a person. Taking its status as a legal “person” to the logical conclusion, the film puts the corporation on the psychiatrist’s couch to ask “What kind of person is it?” What the study illustrates is that in the its behavior, this type of “person” typically acts like a dangerously destructive psychopath without conscience. The film was nominated for over 26 international awards.

This powerful film brings together art critic John Berger, author of “Ways of Seeing”, and world-renowned photographer Sebastião Salgado for a discussion about the power of photographic images to inform and inspire. As they peruse Salgado’s book, “Migrations”, a project that took him to 43 countries in order to document the experiences of people pushed from their homes and traditions to cities and their margins – slums and streets and refugee camps, their intimate and wide-ranging conversation, inter-cut with Salgado’s photographs, explores the deeper meanings of Salgado’s images, addressing both their artistic and emotional qualities and their political function as a critique of globalization.

The consumerism totally consumed us.

Surplus: Terrorized into Being Consumers from 2003 is a film odyssey about the destructive sides of consumer culture and described as “a global doomsday satire set to music”. It used the language of music video, propaganda and commercial advertising as a response to the forces of globalization.

Why is the lifestyle of consumerism a source of such rage today? How come the privilege of buying goods does not automatically lead to happiness? Why all this emptiness despite our wealth? Surplus’ approach is to portray this issue from an emotional rather than a factual perspective.
